NMWA FilmFest almost over

This has been an amazing festival that has turned to be quite a journey for all of us involved. Everything came together beautifully. Everyone involved had one thing in common, a passion for women's films.

Kj Mohr is originally from Chicago and some call her a "programmer" others a “film curator” or “curator of art”. I call her my friend. I'm Zulma, an artist that was introduced to KJ through a curator from Syracuse named Astria Suparak. I advised Astria that I was new to D.C. and I did not know a single person in the D.C. art world. Astria said, I only know one person and she happens to have a great job at the National Women in the Arts. “She's really nice,” she said, “just email her and see how things go.”

Well, I emailed KJ and she informed me that she was organizing a film festival. She asked me to send her my short films. So I did. I sent KJ a DVD I made at home on my Final Cut Pro Studio.

I didn't hear back from her for a while. I did not get a phone call; nothing. I was beginning to wonder if she liked my films. Then one day she called me and said, ok, send me film descriptions via email and would you like to display the Turnstyle piece in the gallery. I said, "Wow, Yes!" Thank you KJ "When do I send you the looping DVD's for that two channel installation."

"Whenever" KJ calmy said. Then in September she called again and asked that I come in on Thursday because it was now time to install. She gave me quick tour of the Education Gallery in the NMWA and we helped greg the installer mount monitors.

KJ made some decisions as to where everything would go and then next thing I know the filmmakers were in need of where to sleep. The convergence began. The halls of this amazing museum suddenly filled with hundreds of people I did not know. Since then my bag got filled with business cards from dozens of women such as Amy Jackson, Gail Rebhan, Delia Aguilar, Andrea Ellis, Nzingha Kendall, Mary Billyou, Peggy Simpson, Gillian Brown and of course Giovanna Chesler

I'm missing some films by blogging right now. I better head back into the fifth floor Theatre of the NMWA. Tonight however is the big Closing party and I am not missing that.

The caterers are getting everything ready while the films are still rolling. I am honored to have been part of this and now I have taken advantage of this blog. If you'd like me to add to the blog any of your feedback please email me at zulma@chicanafeliz.com
